Dameas from Croton
Dameas ( ancient Greek Δαμέας ) was a Greek sculptor from the Great Greek city of Croton , who worked in the second half of the 6th century BC. Was active.
Dameas created a bronze winner statue of the wrestler Milon on the occasion of his victory at the 62nd Olympic Games in 532 BC. Chr. Pausanias , who found the statue in place during his visit to Olympia in the 2nd century AD, tells of a legend according to which Milon carried the statue to the Altis himself .
The fragment of a limestone statue base found in Olympia has been variously associated with the statue of Dameas. Because of the extensive destruction of the inscription, however, it cannot be clearly assigned to him.
