Armin Grunwald (born June 20, 1960 in Soest ) is a German physicist , philosopher and technology impact assessor and heads several German technology assessment facilities.

Life

Armin Grunwald studied physics, mathematics and philosophy. After his physics degree in 1983, he was in 1987 with a thesis in theoretical solid state physics at the University of Cologne to Dr. rer. nat. PhD. In 1998 he completed his habilitation in philosophy at the Philipps University of Marburg and received the venia legendi in philosophy at the University of Marburg.

From 1987 to 1991 Grunwald was a systems specialist and project manager at Systems Research Laboratories GmbH, Cologne, from 1991 to 1995 research assistant in the main space system analysis department at the German Aerospace Center , in 1995 deputy head of department at the Science Council's office and from 1996 to 1999 Deputy Director of the European Academy for Research into the Consequences of Scientific and Technical Developments in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. Since October 1999 he has headed the largest facility for technology assessment in Germany and worldwide, the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) in Karlsruhe , and since 2002 also the parliamentary TA facility in Germany, the Office for Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag (TAB). In 2007 he also took over the chair for technology philosophy and technology ethics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

The teaching and research focus of Grunwald is the theory of technology assessment, ethics of technology, concepts of sustainability as well as nanotechnology and society.

In addition to the program management "Technology, Innovation and Society" (TIG) External Link of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), he is the spokesman for the "Technology, Innovation and Society" program of the Helmholtz Association and the spokesman for the focus "Man and Technology External Link" of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

Grundwald is a member of the executive committee of the German Academy of Science and Engineering acatech and a member of the sustainability advisory board of the state of Baden-Württemberg. He is a member of the advisory board of the network of the German-speaking technology assessment community (NTA) and advisory board of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research's "Innovation and Technology Analysis" program. He chairs the International Advisory Board for the Netherlands Science Foundation's Responsible Innovation program. he is a member of the program council of the Futurium Berlin.

From 2014 to 2016 as a representative of science, member of the Commission for the Storage of Highly Radioactive Waste Materials (Repository Commission) in accordance with Section 3 of the Site Selection Act . and member of the ethics committee for autonomous and networked driving of the Federal Ministry of Transport (2016–2017). He is a member of the National Advisory Committee to support the search for a repository for highly radioactive waste and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment
