history

Schmidtheim is first mentioned as Smideheim in a royal charter from 867 . Towards the end of the 12th century, a noble family von Smydeheim is mentioned in the documents. To manifest their power, the Lords of Schmidtheim built a castle near the parish church. The foundation walls of today's castle are largely identical to this first fortification. Around 1500 the sex died out in the male line. The successor was the Beissel von Gymnich family, who still live in Schmidtheim Castle today.

On July 1, 1969, Schmidtheim was incorporated into Dahlem.

Schmidtheim Castle

The palace complex was built between the 16th and 18th centuries. First, the particularly striking residential tower was built. The facility was then expanded to include a bailey with a farmyard, two side wings and a four-part fountain basin in the courtyard. The trenches of the former two-part moated castle are now filled in. The castle is still privately owned by the Graf Beissel von Gymnich family .

church

Today's Schmidtheim church dates back to the 12th century. The Romanesque bell tower is still preserved from this period . The old, presumably Romanesque, nave was replaced between 1720 and 1722 by a hall church with a three-sided choir in the Baroque style . The construction of the curly baroque church spire probably also fell during this time.

In 1964 and 1965, a much larger extension was added to the south wall of the church.
