The NRW tariff is a nationwide transport tariff for local public transport in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) . With it the tariff barriers between bus and train on the one hand and the different transport associations and communities on the other hand should be broken down. Legally, it is the successor to the local transport tariff of Deutsche Bahn in NRW .

history

As early as August 1, 2004 (level 1), the following tickets were offered as a "advance service" for a flat-rate tariff:

  • SchöneFahrtTicket NRW (adult / child) for a journey to a destination within 2 hours
  • SchöneTagTicket NRW Single for any number of journeys Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays
  • SchönerTagTicket NRW 5 people for any number of trips Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays
  • Schöne JahresTicket NRW for any number of trips within one year
  • SchöneFerienTicket NRW for any number of trips within the respective holiday period

New and unprecedented nationwide was the short trip ticket for up to 2 hours of free travel in one direction, i.e. without the possibility of returning. A state ticket and the SchöneFerienTicket NRW , which can be seen as a model for NRW , were already available beforehand. However, these tickets were expanded to regular offers with the 1st stage of the national tariff.

On June 12, 2005, sales of relations-related tickets began (level 2). These expanded the local transport tariff of Deutsche Bahn to include the option of using both local rail transport as well as pre- and post-carriage (journey to the starting station and onward journey from the destination station) light rail vehicles , trams and buses throughout North Rhine-Westphalia with just one ticket .

The NRW tariff replaced the previous local transport tariff of the DB in North Rhine-Westphalia, which, however, was still used to determine the price of the rail portion of the journey. A flat-rate surcharge has been included in the ticket price for pre- and post-carriage with municipal transport. This surcharge of initially 70 cents for each individual ticket was increased annually and was already 1.20 euros from January 1, 2010. For tickets with a BahnCard discount, the price is reduced according to the respective discount rate. The surcharge was binding according to the principle of solidarity, i.e. This means that it also had to be paid if local public transport could not be used for the pre- and / or post-carriage in regions with poorly developed local public transport (especially on Sundays and public holidays). This principle also increased the local transport prices for commuters who use park-and-ride to get to their starting station and can reach their workplace on foot at their destination, i.e. who have no need for pre- and post-carriage use. On the other hand, long-term regional bus connections (e.g. Münster Hbf - Vreden, approx. 68 km) can be covered with RelationspreisTickets as part of the pre- / post-carriage .

Since June 10, 2007 there has been a fixed connection price (level 3) between two municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia. Previously, the price was directly dependent on the departure and / or destination station of the journey.

Since December 13, 2015, the NRW tariff has been a relative tariff that is independent of the DB local transport tariff. All means of transport may be used on all normal routes between the starting and destination communities.

As of August 1, 2017, the NRW tariff will be replaced by a new “ Westfalentarif ” tariff association for journeys beyond the regional network in the Westphalian part of the country . However, Westphalian cities in the Ruhr area such as Bochum are excluded from this. The parallel affiliation to VRR and the new tariff association is only intended for Dortmund , Hagen and some neighboring tariff areas.

scope of application

The NRW tariff is the nationwide tariff for local transport between the regions of North Rhine-Westphalia. It ensures door-to-door tariffs in NRW local transport for all bus and train connections between the network areas in NRW. The advantage: local transport customers no longer have to buy a new ticket at the network area borders or when changing trains. You can use all buses, trams, city trains, underground trains, and local trains with the same ticket. Another plus point: The NRW tariff includes all cities and municipalities in NRW. Bus and train customers can also travel from locations without a rail connection to any other location within North Rhine-Westphalia with one ticket.

The NRW tariff is used for local transport trips within North Rhine-Westphalia and the city of Osnabrück, if the tariff collar and tariff area limits are exceeded and no transitional tariff exists. Since December 13, 2015, all means of transport can be used on all normal routes from the starting point to the destination municipality with relation price tickets. Before that, local rail passenger transport had to be used from a train station in the starting municipality to a train station in the destination municipality (in the case of municipalities without a rail connection from / to a specified neighboring municipality) .

In addition, the NRW tariff also applies to some transit routes outside of NRW. They can be used with relation-related tickets and / or cards at the flat rate of the NRW tariff in local rail passenger transport (e.g. the victory route ).

With the NRW tariff, the principle of house-to-house tariffs already implemented at the level of the network and community tariffs is extended to all local transport connections. The BahnCard is partially recognized in the NRW tariff.

Means of transport

The NRW tariff applies to all means of transport that use network or community tariffs .

These include

The NRW tariff generally does not apply to long-distance trains or to a few bus routes that do not apply a network or community tariff (e.g. night bus routes in Bielefeld ).

Range of tickets

The NRW tariff distinguishes between two types of tickets:

  • Flat rate tickets are:
    • a) Season tickets (this also includes day tickets) for any number of journeys within the period of validity in the entire regional traffic of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia or
    • b) Single tickets for a journey with a limited distance due to the time limit ( SchöneFahrtTicket NRW valid for two hours, no return or round trips). You are not tied to a specific travel route. The FahrradTicket NRW is a day ticket that can be used in conjunction with all tickets of the NRW tariff.
  • Relationship price tickets are tickets for a specified route. They are issued as single tickets or season tickets (weekly, monthly tickets). The journey to the starting station and departure from the destination station by municipal transport (light rail, city bus) or regional buses is always included.

Relationship price tickets are also available as connection tickets e.g. B. to season tickets of the regional network tariffs. They can always be used if a trip goes beyond the area of validity of a season ticket to another cooperation area and there is no transitional tariff or tariff collar . It should be noted here that one z. As with VRS - Semesterticket from the VRS in for a ride from Bonn to Wuppertal one additional ticket VRR can buy. For the return journey, however, a return ticket must either be purchased in Bonn or a VRR ticket up to the network border in Wuppertal. The last station in the area of validity of the existing season ticket is decisive for the calculation.

Tariff formation principle

The NRW tariff always applies from "house to house". As with the network and community tariffs, the ticket includes travel on all local transport (i.e. without IC , ICE and Thalys trains).

Ticket purchase

The distribution channels differ depending on the type of ticket.

  • Flat-rate tickets are sold by all transport companies in North Rhine-Westphalia (train, bus or city / tram) and via the Internet as online tickets .
  • Relationship price tickets are essentially only sold in the DB travel centers and agencies and via the ticket machines of the railway companies in North Rhine-Westphalia. In order to ensure nationwide sales of the tariff outside of the traditional distribution channels for rail tickets, a special online ticket NRW (combination of DB online ticket and Ticket2Print from DSW21 ) was introduced on April 1, 2008 , which can be accessed via the online travel information of DB can be purchased. The background to this is that distribution via the sales systems of municipal companies has not yet been implemented because of the high investments required and relatively low sales expected.

Special

The FahrradTicket NRW is available for taking bicycles in the NRW tariff . It is a day ticket for any number of trips. The price is currently a little below that of the DB bicycle single ticket or the DB additional tickets for country tickets . A reservation is expressly recommended for taking bicycles with you on some rail transport lines (operator: NordWestBahn ), but individual passengers with bicycles are transported - if space is available - without prior notification.

Children under six years of age and dogs can be taken along free of charge in the NRW tariff. Other pets are carried free of charge if they are accommodated in suitable containers and can be carried like hand luggage; for country tickets they count as one passenger.
