A bicycle ticket (also bicycle ticket , Switzerland: Veloticket ) is a ticket for taking unpacked bicycles or similar items of luggage on public transport .

In the original form, these are notes (mostly from the railroad) that had to be attached to every bike and given the destination, name and address. The bicycles were then parked in separate luggage compartments or wagons on the trains, or they were accepted and returned by train staff. In local transport, bicycles were later also allowed in all door areas and luggage compartments were made accessible to passengers and fitted with folding seats . This eliminated the need to attach tickets firmly to each bike - the passenger and bike were no longer stored separately.

In long-distance traffic , baggage carts were replaced by compartments with bicycle stands. Due to limited capacities, a registration or reservation must be made here together with the purchase of a bike card . There are also cycle maps for international connections to neighboring countries.

Nowadays, bicycles can be taken on almost all forms of public transport - underground , city rail , tram , bus, ferry. In general, additional tickets are issued for this with very different conditions. No additional ticket is required for local transport in individual federal states ( Hesse , Rhineland-Palatinate , Saarland , Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia ) as well as in some transport associations or individual districts. However, there are restrictions here, especially on weekdays before 9 a.m. or due to different tariff regulations of individual transport companies. In addition, there are also special regulations, for example for holders of subscription season tickets , which allow them to be taken along free of charge at certain times (weekend or evening). The purchase of a bicycle card does not guarantee actual bicycle transport. Sufficient space is required; Strollers, wheelchair users etc. always have priority.

In urban transport there are also time regulations for taking bicycles with you; for example, at the Frankfurt am Main transport company, bicycles are generally only permitted in underground trains, but not in trams and city buses. In underground and suburban trains, there are often bans on bicycles during peak hours, usually Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and sometimes in the afternoon from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., due to the very heavy use of transport by passengers.

In addition, due to limited space, bicycle trailers, tandems and bicycles with motorized equipment (e-bikes), which are counted as motorcycles instead of bicycles according to the road traffic regulations, are not allowed to be taken along.

Output forms in long-distance and local transport

  • Distance -dependent: The conventional additional ticket is a distance-dependent single or return ticket. This also includes bike cards for one-time take with you in an urban area using inner-city transport.
  • Independent of distance : In the development, the local or long-distance additional card for any distance (also in international traffic) represents the second level. These are first flat rates for single trips.

Output forms in local and long-distance transport

  • Day time card : With time cards for any number of journeys on a day, you can travel there and back with one ticket. Bicycle day tickets have evolved from additional tickets for day tickets (city, network day tickets, the Quer-Durch-Land-Ticket , the Schöne-Wochen-Ticket and Ländickets ). In addition to a ticket for the whole day, there was no need to buy a second additional ticket for the return journey on the same day. The additional day ticket is usually offered at the same price as a single bicycle ticket. In the NRW tariff , the bicycle ticket has been replaced by a bicycle day ticket ( FahrradTicket NRW ). In the federal states of Hesse, Thuringia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and Saxony-Anhalt, bicycles can be taken free of charge from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m., on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays all day long on local trains.
  • Monthly season ticket : Bicycle season tickets for the calendar month are available in two types, but so far they have only been offered by transport associations. The original form is the additional card (or token) for a monthly ticket. The requirement was therefore to have a normal season ticket. A monthly bicycle card could also be offered independently of a monthly personal card. Then it could be used together with adult or child single tickets, multiple trips, weekly tickets, etc., even for different routes. The monthly bicycle card often had a network effect in a network area, so it could also be used for different price levels. Today this has become standard in all transport associations. Examples are the monthly bicycle tickets from the tariff association “Der Sechser” ( OWL Verkehr GmbH and the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Münsterland .) These offers make the additional bicycle tickets a separate ticket offer that can be purchased independently of other tickets and used in combination with different tickets. The “additional ticket” area is then left. Transferable time tickets are also possible.

However, some transport associations have now (as of January 2014) stipulated the possibility of bicycle transport in the tariff as part of their personal monthly tickets.

Compensation

Regulation (EC) No. 1371/2007 of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union on the rights and obligations of rail passengers also applies to bicycles. Article 17 (fare compensation) of this regulation stipulates that the minimum compensation is 25% for delays of 60 to 119 minutes and 50% of the ticket price for a delay of 120 minutes. Bicycle tickets are considered travel tickets.
