Bicycle transport

From bicycles (Switzerland: Traveling with a bicycle ) is when it comes to the promotion of an unpackaged bicycle as a self verladenes luggage in public transport goes.

This combination of individual and public transport means that longer distances can be covered relatively easily by bicycle. Getting to the bus stop by bike, then taking your bike with you and then continuing your journey by bike increases the options for use and utilization of public transport offers. Taking bicycles with you is particularly important for cycle tourism , as you do not have to go back to the starting point on a cycle tour. Usually, special bicycle maps must be purchased to take bicycles with you.

National

Germany

In Germany it is possible to take bicycles with you in almost all modes of transport, except for buses in replacement bus services and most ICE connections (there are eight parking spaces in ICE 4 ). The conditions vary greatly depending on the means of transport and the region.

  • In long-distance transport, bicycles can be taken on almost all EC and IC trains as well as most night trains. These trains have special bicycle compartments , seats must be reserved. From May 1999 to December 2002 it was also possible to take bicycles on the ICE on the Stuttgart – Zurich route. Despite customer protests, the bicycle compartments in these ICE trains were expanded again, as the DB Group Management Board decided in a fundamental decision not to transport bicycles on the ICE. This was justified with the required 15 seats lost due to the bicycle compartment and the risk of delays due to passengers with bicycles getting on and off. Regardless of this, it is permissible to transport bicycles that are not ready for use (dismantled bicycle, etc.) as a load as well as folded folding bicycles free of charge on the ICE. The ICE 4, which has been in use since December 2017, has eight bicycle parking spaces (e.g. on the Hamburg – Munich connection).
Overview of free bicycle transport in local / regional transport in the individual transport associations in Germany (as of July 2015)
  • It is almost always possible to take bicycles with you on local rail transport (including S-Bahn trains ). There are only a few exceptions that are limited to rush hour. Almost all trains have multi-purpose compartments that are used to transport bicycles, strollers , wheelchairs and loads. If there are no such compartments, the bike can be taken in the entry area.
  • In subways and urban and trams also increasingly multipurpose compartments are used, but there are often off-times for the bicycles during rush hours .
  • In city and regional buses there are different regulations, ranging from excluding bicycles to taking individual bicycles in the interior of the bus for a limited or permanent period to carrying a bicycle rack or even a trailer to transport a large number of bicycles on tourist routes pass.
  • It is generally possible to take it along on ferries or car ferries .

In regional rail transport in Baden-Württemberg , Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia as well as in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland , local transport is free of charge (some restrictions on working days before 9 a.m.). In some transport associations or districts , bicycle transport is also free, otherwise there are bicycle transport tariffs with very different conditions.

In some cases, restrictions apply to taking e-bikes with you .
