St. Marienstern Monastery with a view towards Crostwitz

Horjany ( Sorbian for "Oberland") is the common name for the higher, smaller part of the former monastery care of St. Marienstern in Panschwitz-Kuckau . The area is located in the center of the Bautzen district on the middle course of the monastery water in Upper Lusatia . It stretches between the places Crostwitz ( Chrósćicy ) in the east, Ostro ( Wotrow ) in the south and Nebelschütz ( Njebjelčicy ) in the west and is part of today's Sorbian core language area. In the center is Panschwitz with the monastery.

In contrast to the Netherlands around Ralbitz and Wittichenau , the Oberland has loess-rich, more productive soils and a smaller proportion of forest areas. That made it the more affluent part of monastery maintenance in the past. In addition, the landscape is hilly.

Other places in the Oberland are Miltitz and Höflein . Between the 16th and 19th centuries, all of the places mentioned were subject to the lordship of the Marienstern Monastery for a long time and are therefore still predominantly Catholic today.

A well-known Sorbian brass band was named after the Horjany .
