geography

The square village of Miltitz is located about seven kilometers south-east of the large district town of Kamenz in the humid valley of the Jauer ( Jawora ), which also feeds the village pond. With its location in the hilly Upper Lusatian region, the place is part of the so-called " Horjany " (Oberland) of the former St. Marienstern monastery care . The landscape slopes slightly to the northwest with the course of the Jauerbach. The stream was formerly dammed below Miltitz. In 2006 the reservoir popular with anglers was drained; the dam now only serves to protect against possible floods. The highest elevation in the Miltitzer area is the Steinberg (206 m) to the north .

The neighboring towns are Dürrwicknitz in the northeast, Panschwitz-Kuckau in the southeast, Thonberg in the west and Nebelschütz in the northwest.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1348 as Mylticz and had been in the possession of the cathedral monastery of Bautzen from at least 1578 , but had to deliver the tithe to the St. Marienstern monastery , in whose interest register it had been listed since at least 1374. These taxes were paid until 1851.

The Thirty Years' War affected Miltitz - like the whole of Upper Lusatia - badly. In 1642, 3500 soldiers were quartered in the small town and its district, who had to be supplied by the population.

Until the 19th century, the proximity to the Via Regia , which ran through the neighboring village of Dürrwicknitz and later via Panschwitz, had a positive effect on local development. It was only with the construction of the direct road from Kamenz to Bautzen that Miltitz got into traffic-related offside.

Until January 1, 1974 Miltitz was an independent rural community, since January 1, 1957 together with the district of Dürrwicknitz. Then the community was incorporated into Nebelschütz.

population

Osterreiter in Miltitz

In 1925 Miltitz had 179 inhabitants, 174 of whom were Catholic. The place is parish to Crostwitz from time immemorial .

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 170 inhabitants in the 1880s; 162 of them were Sorbs (95%) and eight were Germans.

After rising to over 250 as a result of refugees after 1945, the number of inhabitants in the village has remained almost the same over the past fifty years. As a result, the proportion of Sorbs in the village fell to 68% by 1956 and is now a good 50 percent.

The population structure is more balanced compared to the Saxon average; the birth rates higher, the average age lower.

Economy and Infrastructure

Southwest of Miltitz - near the bypass road - there is a former granite quarry that was in operation at the end of the 18th century, was used by VEB Lausitzer Granit Demitz-Thumitz from 1970 and ceased operations in 2000. Today it is filled with water. Agrar GmbH Miltitz, which is based on the road towards Elstra , emerged from the former local LPG . There is also a small industrial park there. Agrar GmbH cultivates 1170 hectares of land. The former megalithic brick factory is now part of Wienerberger , the world's largest brick manufacturer.

The place has also been the seat of the Christian-Social Educational Organization in Saxony since 1991.

Miltitz is not far from the state road 102 ( Ruhland –Kamenz– Bischofswerda ), which serves as a bypass from Kamenz and the motorway feeder to the A4 and A13 . The Burkau junction of the A4 is nine kilometers south and can be reached in a few minutes.

From 1969 to 1992 there was a kindergarten in the village, which was finally closed due to low birth rates.

Attractions

The " Miłočanska žaba " ( Miłočanska žaba ) located on the Jauerbach to the north-west of the village is a large chunk of granite that was shaped like a frog in the Ice Age and is therefore known in the area. Also worth seeing are the three-sided courtyards of the village with their arches facing the street, as well as some half-timbered houses and numerous crucifixes.

Miltitz lies on the traditional routes of the Easter rider processions from Nebelschütz and Ostro to the other place.
