A square village is a village form of settlement .

In contrast to a street village , for example , the courtyards or courtyards were not laid out linearly along a traffic route , but are grouped around a square , for example around a meadow . This centrally located open space was originally used as a protected place to stay for larger farm animals at night that were outside the village during the day. Later on this place was partly built with buildings used by the general public, for example the village church. Ponds were also often created here.

Square villages can be distinguished according to the shape of the square. For example, there are round and square villages. This type of settlement occurs in different epochs, for example during the German East Settlement .

The Rundling and the Angerdorf are assigned to the settlement type of the square village .
