The Schmettausche Kartenwerk , also Schmettausche Karten , was a topographical survey of the state of Prussia east of the Weser and Mecklenburg .

Prussia

The Schmettausche map series was created under the direction of the Prussian officer and cartographer Friedrich Wilhelm Karl Graf von Schmettau between 1767 and 1787. The topographical recordings for this map series were systematically recorded and drawn for the then Prussian state territory east of the Weser.

Frederick the Great had reservations about this project. Schmettau created the work on his own initiative and was supported by Friedrich Wilhelm II. And the Minister Friedrich Wilhelm Graf von der Schulenburg-Kehnert , who supported it. The result was 270 sections (sheets) measuring 97 cm × 64 cm on a scale of 1: 50,000.

Today they are in the possession of the Berlin State Library - Prussian Cultural Heritage .

Mecklenburg

Schmettau also published the first map series based on area-wide surveying for Mecklenburg. In 1780/82 eight map sheets appeared under the title “Carte chorographique et militaire du Duché de Mecklenburg-Strehlitz” for the eastern part of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (scale 1: 33,333), in 1788/93 another 16 map sheets appeared under the title “Topographische, Oeconomische and Military Charter of the Duchy of Mecklenburg Schwerin and the Principality of Ratzeburg ” for Mecklenburg-Schwerin and the Principality of Ratzeburg , the western part of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (scale 1: 50,000). All Mecklenburg maps were engraved in copper on the basis of the map series by Carl Friedrich von Wiebeking . In 1794 a general map of both duchies of Mecklenburg and eastern Western Pomerania was published.
