List of map series

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Philipp Apian, 1568
Isaac Jakob von Petri, 1762

The list of map series contains current and historical map series . The original meaning of map series lay largely in military use, land registry administration and tax collection. Topographic maps are one of the most important maps . Today historical maps are used to document urban development, to help with archaeological investigations, as a planning basis for renaturation and to illustrate the development of cartography.

Atlases such as Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by Abraham Ortelius (1570), Atlas Maior by Joan Blaeu (1635) and later works are not listed.

Historical maps

The maps were mostly the result of elaborate land surveys that lasted several years and that were often initiated directly by the heads of the respective territories before the formation of modern states.

Current map series

The official Austrian maps are produced and continuously updated by the Federal Office for Metrology and Surveying (BEV) in Vienna. The maps are produced with route markings by alpine clubs (including numbering) and road imprints (editions only with route markings or only with road imprints are no longer available) and are also available digitally, also at www.austrianmap.at. The BEV catalog contains the details. Map 1: 50,000-UTM is the basic map series. By the end of 2009, this map series was converted from the system of the old Austrian land survey (map sheets of the 3rd land survey ) to the representation according to the " Universal Transversal Mercator System" UTM. The 12 '× 20' sheet cut was also introduced. The maps are equipped with a UTM network, the federal reporting network BMN (modified Gauß-Krüger network ) is shown in the map frame. The BEV also maintains the Austrian cadastre . Because of this and the fact that the land register is public in Austria, it is possible to offer combinations of aerial photos (orthophotos) and cadastral data: the cadastral folder with orthophoto (b / w / color), property register and owner register on a scale of 1: 500 to 1: 5,000 .

United States

In the United States there are three series of official topographical maps.

designation scale Appearance leaf Cartographer or publisher region Remarks
Topographic map 1: 24,000 1:  000000000024000.000000000024,000 United States Geological Survey United States of America including Puerto Rico . The approximately 54,000 map sheets in this series generally extend over 7.5 minutes of length and width of each, length measurements are given in miles and height measurements in feet. In Alaska, the scale 1: 25,000 is sometimes used differently. Maps at this scale are limited to the areas around Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Prudhoe Bay in this state. Maps of Puerto Rico are 1: 20,000 scale. The outer areas in the central Pacific are shown on maps at a scale between 1: 10,000 and 1: 50,000. This series of maps is published by the United States Geological Survey .
Topographic map 1: 100,000 1:  000000000100000.0000000000100,000 Bureau of Land Management United States of America A map generally spans 30 minutes of latitude and 60 minutes of longitude and is based on a 1: 24,000 map, but distances and heights are given in the metric system. This series of maps is issued by the Bureau of Land Management .
Topographic map 1: 250,000 1:  000000000250000.0000000000250,000 United States Geological Survey United States of America It serves as a base map for thematic maps of geology and aviation. This series of maps usually shows one degree of latitude and two degrees of longitude on one sheet, with deviations on the coasts and in Hawaii . In Alaska, the 153 map sheets in this series cover between one and three degrees of longitude. In this series, distances and heights are based on the imperial system , with around eight percent of the 489 map sheets of the contiguous states in this series already being converted to metric data. This map series was previously created by the US Army and is now under the responsibility of the United States Geological Survey.
