Isaak Jacob von Petri (born September 17, 1705 in Wesel ; † April 12, 1776 in Freienwalde ) was a German engineer , cartographer , architect and Prussian colonel .

biography

He was the youngest of the 24 children of Major General Heinrich Petri von Soomers and his wife Gertrude von Ross . The family originally comes from Soomershausen in the Upper Palatinate and fled from there for religious reasons. The father therefore dropped his noble name from Soomers and called himself just Petri. In Wesel he was General War Commissioner for the Army.

Isaak Jacob joined the army at the age of 14 , where an uncle served in the engineering corps and was in command of the Kosel fortress. At 16 he became a royal conductor with portepee and salary, at 18 he received his patent as a lieutenant and became a hunting engineer. In 1740 he was sent to Magdeburg as an engineer de la Place , where Leopold von Dessau was governor. This made him his adjutant and as such he took part in the first Silesian war . In 1742 he became an engineer-captain .

He then carried out some civil projects such as the construction of the Invalidenhaus in Berlin , the expansion of the Finow Canal and the drainage of the Oderbruch .

In November 1756 he was posted to Küstrin , then in February 1758 to Breslau, where he stayed until 1761 during the Seven Years' War . That year he joins Prince Heinrich's army .

After the war he was back in the Oderbruch and also planned to drain the Warthebruch . But his plans were ultimately accomplished by others.

From 1746 to 1748, Petri built the Invalidenhaus in Berlin for Friedrich II. As a complex comprising three courtyards with simple elongated plastered buildings, an important garden courtyard and the Invalidenpark.

He then completed the expansion of the locks on the Finow Canal and then planned with Simon Leonhard von Haerlem the drainage of the Oderbruch , or the straightening of the Oder. Petri acquired knowledge of drainage in the Netherlands . A canal was created to shorten and accelerate the discharge of the Oder between Hohenwutzen and Güstebiese . Von Petri was the head of the canal construction and his quarters were in Lietzegöricke .

In November 1756 he was posted to Küstrin to repair the neglected fortress. In February 1758 he was transferred to Breslau before the work on the Küstrin Fortress was completed. But he is now in the king’s entourage.

In 1759 the war card developed by Isaak Jacob von Petri appears , which is considered a historical source for Franconia .

In 1760 he was wounded in the foot near Torgau and built a bridge there while he was recovering.

After 1762 the Gantz New And Complete Geographical General Charte Vom Gantzen Churfürstenthum Sachsen was published, which impresses with its excellent quality and attention to detail. This means that von Petri is far ahead of other cartographers of his time, such as Johann Schreiber or Peter Schenk . However, only the first two parts of the map were published.

After the Seven Years' War he is sent back to the Oderbruch to assess the consequences of the war. He was able to implement his proposals there, which cost the Prussian state millions. A cash check also showed the king that no funds had been misappropriated.

In 1765 he made a plan to drain the Warthebruch , which the king found too expensive. Mr. von Brenkenhoff promised to do this for a quarter of the money asked. In the end, however, this became even more expensive for the state.
