Schmitt's Map of Southwest Germany
The Schmitt map of southwest Germany is a military map series that was created after the outbreak of the first coalition war against revolutionary France under the direction of Heinrich von Schmitt on behalf of the German Emperor Franz II . The map series was created following the Josephinische Landesaufnahme and forms its conclusion.
history
In spring 1797, the Reich Marshal and Archduke instructed Charles of Austria-Teschen the 1796 to Quartermaster General appointed Heinrich von Schmitt to merge the existing single sheets to form a closed cartography and thus close the gaps in the staging area against France. Among others, Salzburg , Bavaria , the Palatinate , Württemberg , Baden and Hessen-Nassau were shown . Up to 1798 a large staff of 198 had created a total of 198, mostly carefully recorded and hand-colored sheets on a scale of 1: 57,600 in the format 75 × 56 cm with the help of a measuring table and graphic triangulation. The part concerning Salzburg and Bavaria was created under the guidance of Bavarian Colonel Adrian von Riedl , who was able to use his own maps in part. They were oriented against France and are therefore west.
For military reasons, the partly very precise and detailed, but partly also imprecise sheets of the map series were kept under lock and key. The originals are kept in the Vienna War Archives. The state survey offices have been issuing reproductions since the 1980s.
