The topographic map of the Province of Westphalia and the Rhine Province on a scale of 1:80,000 was published for the Prussian provinces of Westphalia and the Rhine Province in the years 1837 to 1855 in order to have improved maps for military purposes.

The background for the new map project was that Prussia wanted to catch up with the much better French military geography. The map series used by the Prussian army , on the other hand, showed considerable defects. This made it necessary to repeat the land survey in the Rhineland and Westphalia area again. The starting material was the maps of the Prussian premiere .

In connection with these repeated recordings of the Rhine Province up to 1855, the 72-sheet map series "Topographical Map of the Province of Westphalia and the Rhine Province" was created on a scale of 1:80,000, which was derived from the sheets of the first recording.

While elevation points and trigonometric points are still missing from the map and the simple cross signature is retained for the churches, the increased map content is striking.

The first appearance of the telegraph signature of the Prussian optical telegraph line Koblenz-Cologne-Berlin appears to be of historical interest on this card . However, the still missing representation of foreign areas remains typical.

Of the entire map series, 50 sheets are in the area of North Rhine-Westphalia , 21 touch the area of Rhineland-Palatinate , one the area of the Saarland .
