Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, engraving by Schleuen (1770)

Johann David Schleuen was a son of the carter David Schleue (Schley). He learned the craft of engraving from Georg Paul Busch († 1756). In 1736 Schleuen married Barbara Sophia Falcke, the daughter of a blacksmith and armorer. Between the years 1740 and 1769 he moved from the fifth place among eight engravers in Berlin to the second place immediately after the court engraver Georg Friedrich Schmidt . Schleuen became known through numerous city maps of Berlin that he published. He also depicted views of Berlin in 29 copper engravings and recorded historical events in the city in individual sheets. His three sons Johann Georg (1737–1799), Johann Friedrich (1739–1784) and Johann Wilhelm (1748–1812) also worked in his workshop.

From May 1765 to the beginning of April 1767 the writer Gotthold Ephraim Lessing lived with his younger brother Karl in Schleuen's house. Here he finished the " Laocoon " and " Minna von Barnhelm ". Schleuen's wife died at the age of 60 a few months after Lessing's departure on November 16, 1767.
