The map of Northwest Germany , also known as the Large Map of Westphalia or Lecoq's Map , was created between 1797 and 1813 under the direction of the Prussian Major General Karl Ludwig von Le Coq .

The map series was produced during the Napoleonic Wars in large parts of what is now Lower Saxony, Bremen and North Rhine-Westphalia. When Prussia and France made peace in 1795, both states agreed on a line of demarcation that delimited neutral areas. The Prussian Major General von Le Coq was the commanding officer of an observation corps that was sent to monitor this demarcation line. Since Le Coq could not find any usable maps for the area in which his troops were distributed, he decided to send some of his officers to carry out the necessary surveys.

The scale of 1: 86.400 was chosen for the map series , which was already used for the Carte de France (Cassini map). For lack of time, in addition to the measurements, existing maps in particular were adapted and missing parts quickly added. The accuracy of about 1,000 control points is given as about 100 m. The map series comprises 20 sheets as well as a title sheet and a sheet overview. The leaves engraved in copper are usually 90 by 56 cm in size.

In 1815 an overview map was published on a scale of about 1: 560,000 under the title “Das Nordwestliche Deutschland” or “Generalblatt zu der Generalmajor v. Lecoq in 22 sheets published large map of Westphalia ”by Karl Friedrich Klöden .

Reproductions are currently being sold in their original scale by the Authority for State Surveying and Geographic Base Information Lower Saxony (LGN) and the State Surveying Office of North Rhine-Westphalia .
