St. Jakob (also St. Jakob am Joch , Italian San Giacomo ) is a village in the Villnöß valley and belongs to the municipality of Villnöß in South Tyrol ( Italy ).

geography

St. Jakob is a scattered settlement with around 70 inhabitants. It is located at an altitude of around 1300  m slm. The village can be reached on foot from St. Peter in half an hour.

history

Settlement in the area is documented and dates back to the 12th century. At that time the farms Pramstrahler , Unterweg , Drocker , Zinner , Gutshof zu Puez and Rafreid were mentioned, which still exist today.

St. Jacob's Church

The center of the settlement is the St. Jacob's Church, originally built around 1349 in Romanesque style and gothicized in the 15th century, the nave walls of which are said to date from the 12th century. Ruprecht Potsch and Philipp Diemer created the valuable winged altar in 1517. The altar is a rarity because it has elements from two artistic styles: the sculptures in the late Gothic style already show elements of the Renaissance in their painting .

economy

Agriculture in the form of dairy cattle is largely practiced in St. Jakob, and tourism has also gained in importance here recently.
