The Villnößtal with a view of the Geisler

The Villnößtal ( Italian Val di Funes ), also called Villnößer Tal or simply Villnöß , is a valley about 24 km long in the South Tyrolean Dolomites . Administratively, it is largely located in the municipality of Villnöß , the orographically left valley flanks in the entrance area belong to Klausen . On the north side, the Villnößtal is framed by mountains of the Peitlerkofel group , on the south side by the Geisler group . Higher parts of the valley are protected in the Puez-Geisler Nature Park .

The Villnößtal branches off from the central Eisack valley in an easterly direction and is drained by the Villnößer Bach . The valley entrance area is shaped like a gorge between porphyry and quartz phyllite layers. In the further course the valley expands to a wide high valley, which was filled with interglacial gravel and offers space for several villages.

For motor traffic , the valley is first and foremost opened up by state road 27, which starts north of Klausen in the Eisack Valley and crosses the valley lengthways. In addition, the state road 163 branching off at St. Peter provides a transition to the Afer Valley, which runs parallel to the north, via the Russiskreuz ( 1729  m ) .
