St. Peter ( Italian: San Pietro ) is the capital of the municipality of Villnöß in South Tyrol ( Italy ).

geography

St. Peter is located at an altitude of 1150  m slm in the middle of the Villnöss valley and is the starting point for numerous hiking trails. It is reached from the Eisack Valley via a well-developed valley road. It continues via St. Magdalena to the Zanser Alm, where the Puez-Geisler Nature Park begins. Above St. Peter, a smaller road over the Russi cross into Aferer Valley and on to Kofeljoch , for Würzjoch and the Ladin Val Badia . It is also possible to cross over into the Val Gardena via well-marked hiking trails . The Pitzak group of houses on the other side of the valley also belongs to St. Peter .

Attractions

  • The parish church, consecrated to the apostles Peter and Paul, was built at the end of the 18th century according to plans by the Bozen builder Matthäus Wachter and consecrated in 1801. The ceiling paintings in the late Baroque style were created by the Tyrolean painter Joseph Schöpf . A previous church is said to have been mentioned for the first time in 1058. The bell tower with the onion-shaped dome was built in 1897. It is 65 m high.
