Karl Friedrich von Klöden

Karl Friedrich von Klöden (also Kloeden) (born May 21, 1786 in Berlin ; † January 9, 1856 ibid) was a German educator , historian , geographer , geologist and paleontologist .

biography

Karl Friedrich Klöden, son of the Prussian NCO Joachim Friedrich Klöden (1751–1809), who lost his title of nobility when his father enrolled at school, spent his childhood (1796–1800) in Märkisch Friedland with a sister . In the village school he learned writing, simple arithmetic and the Bible by heart. He acquired self-taught knowledge in geography , geometry , Latin, French, Italian and music.

After an apprenticeship as a gilder with an uncle in Berlin, where he also learned to engrave cards and scripts, he earned his living as a private music teacher, engraver for the Schroppsche Verlagsanstalt (which laid cards) and as a teacher of form, geometry and mineralogy the Plamann educational institution in Berlin. Klöden also studied philosophy , theology , mineralogy with Christian Samuel Weiss and higher mathematics at the Berlin University . In 1817 he took over the position of director and first teacher at the newly established Potsdam teachers' college .

From there, the Prussian Ministry of Education brought him to head the first municipal trade school, the Berlin trade school, founded in 1824 . He held this office until 1855, which is why the institution was also called "Kloedensche Gewerbeschule". In addition, he initially headed the Kölln High School , which was founded in 1824 as an alternative to the then dominant, humanistic education. After a stroke in 1854, he gave up the management of the trade school in 1855.

Klöden himself researched geography in Europe throughout his life and was considered an excellent cartographer, collected and certain minerals, published on geodesy and astronomy. He was also a geologist and paleontologist and discovered the first brown coal deposits in Brandenburg. In 1821 he founded the weather observation in Potsdam. The focus of his research was on the medieval history of Berlin and Brandenburg . In addition, Klöden self-published a family history of the Kloeden family in 1854 .

He was a full member of the Society for Geography , the Association for Brandenburg History in Berlin as well as a Freemason and at times Grand Master of the Great Lodge of Prussia called Royal York for Friendship .

He was buried in the Luisenstadt cemetery in Berlin-Kreuzberg. The grave is no longer preserved, in contrast to the grave of his son Gustav Adolf von Klöden .

family

He married on October 29, 1809 in Berlin Johanna Heyl (* December 18, 1784, † April 17, 1857), a daughter of the teacher Daniel Heyl . The couple had several children including:

  • Ida (February 6, 1816; † November 23, 1886) ⚭ 1833 Friedrich Wilhelm Jähns (1809–1888)
  • Gustav Adolf (born June 24, 1814 in Berlin; † March 11, 1885 in Berlin), geographer ⚭ 1840 Karoline Frederike Minna Krause (born April 24, 1821; † July 14, 1897)
  • Mathilde Amalie Frederike (* June 24, 1814 - May 19, 1894)
  • Karl August (born August 25, 1810 - † February 14, 1811)

Honors

For his services to the development of the educational system he was honored as a knight of the Red Eagle Order 4th class during his lifetime. In 1846 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Berlin. Kloedenstrasse in Berlin-Kreuzberg has been named after him since 1891. On the house (formerly Niederwallstraße 12), in which he lived from 1824 to 1855, a copper plaque reminds of Klöden.
