Ludwig Ravenstein

Ludwig Ravenstein (* 1838 ; † April 18, 1915 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German cartographer and publisher .

Life

Ludwig Ravenstein, the younger brother of Ernst Ravenstein , took over Ravenstein's Geographische Verlagsanstalt from his father Friedrich August Ravenstein in 1866 .

Ravenstein published topographic maps of Wiesbaden and the Niederwald as well as a special map of the Odenwald. He created the map of Germany published by the Bibliographical Institute in 12 sheets (1: 850,000) and the map of the Eastern Alps in 9 sheets (1: 250,000), and in 1891 an overview map of the Eastern Alps in two sheets (1: 500,000), a map of the Swiss Alps (1: 250,000) and numerous maps of the Central Rhine mountain groups. From Hermann Oppermann he acquired "Liebenow's Special Map of Central Europe" in 164 sheets (1: 300,000), of which a revised edition appeared from 1900. The publisher's bicycle and automobile maps were also particularly well-known. During the First World War, Ravenstein published maps of the various theaters of war.

After his death, his son Hans, who had been a partner at his side since 1899, took over the company.
