history

The place is first mentioned in the middle of the 13th century as Radelwiz . The current form of the place name has been recorded since 1791.

At the time it was first mentioned, half of the village belonged to the St. Marienstern monastery . Since 1290 it was completely in their possession, as were many other places along the monastery water. Because of this, the Catholic faith in this area survived the Reformation. The former monastery-owned places in the area now form the core area of the Sorbs . When the Hussite Wars also seized Upper Lusatia around 1429, the church in Ralbitz was destroyed. The Trinity Column now stands on the site of the old altar.

Easter riding is mentioned for the first time in 1541 . The oldest mentioned route leads from Wittichenau to Ralbitz.

From 1840 on, Ralbitz was an independent rural community. 1957 Naußlitz , 1974 Cunnewitz and Schönau were incorporated.

Towards the end of the Second World War , the Ralbitzer church burned down again on April 27, 1945. It was reopened in 1948.

population

The last population data for the independent municipality of Ralbitz indicate 1026 inhabitants for 1990. In 1890 the place itself had 273 inhabitants. Contrary to the East Saxon trend, the population has increased by around ten percent over the past twenty years and is now around 330. Ralbitz is the largest district in the municipality.

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 260 inhabitants in the 1880s; among them were 259 Sorbs and one German. In 1956 Ernst Tschernik counted a Sorbian-speaking population of 88.5% in the municipality of Ralbitz.

religion

Most of the population is Catholic.

Until the 15th century Ralbitz was parish in Wittichenau , then in Crostwitz . In 1716, Sankt Katharina became a branch church in Crostwitz and finally in 1752 a parish church. The parish of Ralbitz today includes the church in Königswartha and the pilgrimage church in Rosenthal .

The last information on denomination dates from 1925. At that time, all but one of the residents were Catholic.

On September 10, 2019, the Apostolic Nuncio in Germany visited Nikola Eterović Ralbitz and celebrated a Holy Mass in the St. Katharinen Church. It was the first visit by a nuncio to the parish since 1929, when Eugenio Pacelli, later Pope Pius XII. who attended the community.
