Schönau , in Upper Sorbian , is a village in the north of the East Saxon district of Bautzen , which has belonged to the Ralbitz-Rosenthal community since 1994 . With around 270 inhabitants, it is the third largest district of the municipality and is one of the core settlement areas of the Sorbs . Most of the population speaks Sorbian as their mother tongue.
The place name either comes from the Slavic šuma for "forest" or - rather unusual for the region - it was derived from the German name for the "beautiful river valley" of the monastery water.
geography
The place is located 2.8 kilometers northwest of the community center Ralbitz at 136 meters above sea level. NN on the left side of the monastery water , which, coming from Panschwitz-Kuckau , flows through the so-called " Netherlands " ( Delany ). The neighboring towns are Sollschwitz in the north, Cunnewitz in the east on the other side of the Klosterwasser and Laske and Schmerlitz in the south. The nearest cities are Wittichenau, seven kilometers to the north, and the large district town of Kamenz , which is eleven kilometers to the south-west. South of Schönau, the protected Lasker Auenwald is the last natural section of the Klosterwasseraue.
After the settlement, Schönau is a street village with Gassendorf and Rundweiler parts. The old manor is located near the center of the village on the road to Cunnewitz.
While the eastern surroundings of Schönau - the river floodplain - are used for agriculture, extensive forest areas extend to the west. There are also several fish ponds and the Ziegeleiberg, which is 165 m above sea level. NN highest elevation in the vicinity of the place. The ponds extended as far as Schönau into the 20th century.

The settlement was first mentioned as Schzonow in the 14th century . From the 17th to the 19th century, in 1667, first mentioned in local had Rittergut the manorial held the entire district on almost. In 1837 the St. Marienstern Monastery bought the estate and its lands.
After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the border between the kingdoms of Saxony and Prussia ran about one kilometer north of Schönau until 1945 . For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 247 inhabitants for the place in the 1880s; 237 of them were Sorbs and ten Germans. In 1956 Ernst Tschernik counted a Sorbian-speaking population of 89.6% in the community of Schönau.
In 1890 Schönau had 246 inhabitants, the same number as 60 years earlier. In 1997 the population peaked at 330 - at that time Schönau was briefly the largest town in the municipality. Since then it has decreased by 15%.
The inhabitants are traditionally almost exclusively of the Catholic denomination; the place was parish to Crostwitz since time immemorial and to Ralbitz since 1716 . Catholic Sorbian services are also held in the Schönauer Gutskapelle. The Protestant part belongs to the Schmeckwitz parish .
Economy and Infrastructure
Schönau is a bit off the well-developed state roads 92 (Crostwitz - A 13 ) and 101 ( Königswartha - A 4 ). Local roads connect the place with Schmerlitz, Sollschwitz and the places of the community of Oßling . The next junction of the A 4 ( Uhyst am Taucher ) is 16 kilometers away.
The Schönauer Gasthof is the venue for many Sorbian events, including a. the traditional Póstnička of the Sorbian Gymnasium Bautzen . About 20 other small businesses are also registered in the village.
