The place name is derived from the Sorbian smjerdźata ("stinking") and probably refers to the (former) location of the place in a swampy brook valley and the corresponding smell.

geography

The place is about nine kilometers northeast of Kamenz and 20 kilometers northwest of Bautzen on the western edge of the agriculturally used Klosterwasser floodplain and belongs to Delany , the "Netherlands" of the former Marienstern monastery maintenance . Extensive forests extend to the west and north; in the east is the Lasker Auenwald, the last largely natural part of the Klosterwasseraue. The Piskowitz water , a tributary of the monastery water , flows through Schmerlitz .

In terms of settlement history, Schmerlitz is a Rundweiler, which was later expanded mainly in a north-westerly direction. The manor is located in the center of the village. The neighboring towns are Schönau in the north, Laske in the east, Rosenthal in the south, and - separated from Schmerlitz by forests - Piskowitz in the southwest and Döbra in the northwest. The Saxon State Road 92 runs through Schmerlitz .

The hamlet of Neu-Schmerlitz is located in the middle of the forest between Döbra and Schmerlitz .

history

The settlement was first mentioned in 1374 as the seat of a Joris de Smerdacz , although a moated castle already existed before that. The current (German) form of the name has been in use since 1529. Until 1667, the manor was in the parish of Crostwitz at the Räckelwitz manor , in that year a manor was established in Schmerlitz, which took over the manor.

Until January 1, 1974, Schmerlitz was an independent rural community, since 1957 with Laske as a district, then it was first incorporated into Rosenthal and on January 1, 1994 into the new community Ralbitz-Rosenthal.

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 108 in the 1880s; including without exception Sorbs . In 1956 Ernst Tschernik counted a Sorbian-speaking population of 92.4% in the community of Schmerlitz. To this day, Sorbian is the predominant everyday language in the town.

The population remained largely stable over the course of the 19th and early 20th centuries and has fallen from 200 to around 170 after 1990.

The majority of the devout residents are Roman Catholics to Ralbitz , the small Protestant portion belong to the Schmeckwitz parish .

Culture

The Sorbian folk dance group Schmerlitz is known nationwide and is one of the most famous Sorbian ensembles thanks to its performances at festivals in Europe and worldwide.

The mostly well-developed state road 92 to Bernsdorf runs through Schmerlitz , which is a convenient connection to both Hoyerswerda and the A 13 to Berlin .
