The monastery water , in Upper Sorbian Klóšterska woda , previously also Tušina , is a right tributary of the Black Elster in Eastern Saxony . It crosses the core of today's Sorbian settlement area in the Bautzen district in Upper Lusatia . The river got its name from the Catholic monastery of St. Marienstern and flows mainly through areas that were formerly owned by it.
course
The river rises at about 280 m above sea level. NN at the western end of Burkau near Bischofswerda , flows eastwards and joins in the center with another source arm, which rises on the northwest slope of the Butterberg . It crosses the place further from west to east and then turns northwards. Before Ostro , the next place on the stream, the deeply cut valley of the monastery water forms the natural basis for one of the best preserved fortifications from the Slavic settlement period, the "Ostroer Schanze". It rises on the east side of the river, while the place Ostro is on the west side.
In Panschwitz-Kuckau , the monastery water flows around the eponymous St. Marienstern monastery to the south and west and passes the “Kuckauer Schanze”, where the river was also used as a natural line of defense. Shortly after the village, a bridge was wanted to be built for the Radibor - Kamenz ( Saxon Northeast Railway ) railway, which began in 1912 , but its construction stalled in the early stages and was finally stopped during the First World War .
At Räckelwitz the river leaves the Sorbian "Oberland" ( Horjany ) and enters the "Netherlands" ( Delany ). The local floodplain of the river has been almost completely deforested since the Middle Ages. In addition, the monastery water was straightened and regulated in favor of agriculture after 1945. The swampy floodplains and alluvial forests have almost completely disappeared here. The only exception is the Lasker Auenwald nature reserve . The last natural section of the floodplain is located here over a length of around two kilometers.
Until 1945, the river formed the border between the kingdoms of Saxony and Prussia a few hundred meters north of Schönau .
At Kotten the monastery water flows out at about 130 m above sea level. NN in the Black Elster.
Others
The administrative association Am Klosterwasser is named after the river. It includes the five core communities of today's Sorbian settlement area.
During a flood on August 3, 1991, the St. Marienstern monastery was flooded and the centuries-old monastery nursery was destroyed.
