geography

Kotten is located about 25 kilometers northwest of Bautzen and ten kilometers south of Hoyerswerda in the Upper Lusatian heath and pond landscape . The city of Wittichenau is about four kilometers away. At the northern exit of the village, the monastery water coming from the south flows into the Schwarze Elster . The area is characterized by the floodplain landscapes of the two rivers and a large contiguous forest area, which extends southeast of Kotten over seven kilometers in the direction of Caßlau .

The vicinity of the old street village is flat and criss-crossed by small watercourses. In the 20th century, a settlement was built parallel to the actual street village.

The neighboring towns are Hoske in the northeast, Rachlau in the east, Cunnewitz in the south, Sollschwitz in the west and Saalau in the northwest.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1264 as Chotin . Until the 19th century, the manor was at the Panschwitz monastery of St. Marienstern . Kotten belonged to the Netherlands ( Delany ) of the monastery maintenance. Since 1541, the place has also been recorded as a transit point for the annual Easter Riding between Wittichenau and Ralbitz .

After the Congress of Vienna in 1815 and the relocation of the Prussian-Saxon border, Kotten became a border town. At that time, the state border ran only about 1,300 meters south of the town. While Kotten belonged to Prussia until 1945, the neighboring town of Cunnewitz remained Saxon. Until 1885 there was a Dutch windmill a few meters south of Kotten. A little upstream there was also a water mill on the Elster, the so-called Saalauer Mühle . Their homestead still exists today.

The independent rural community Kotten in the district of Hoyerswerda with the district of Saalau (since July 1, 1950) existed until 1994. After the incorporation into Wittichenau and the district reform, the place was in the district of Kamenz from 1996 to 2008 , since then it has been part of the district of Bautzen.

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 196 inhabitants in the 1880s; 193 of them were Sorbs (98%) and three were Germans. By 1946 the population grew to 232. According to Ernst Tschernik , the Sorbian-speaking population had fallen to 61.4% by 1956. Sorbian is spoken in the village to this day. After 1990 the population decreased slightly and is now 195.

Kotten is traditionally Catholic and has been part of the Wittichenau parish since at least the 16th century. The Protestant part is also parish to Wittichenau.
