geography

The place is about ten kilometers east of Kamenz and 17 kilometers northwest of Bautzen in the agriculturally used floodplain of the monastery water on its left side. Zerna is located in Delany , the "Netherlands" of the former Marienstern monastery care.

In terms of settlement history, Zerna is a round hamlet that was later expanded to the west. The Zernaer Gutshof is located near the monastery water. The neighboring towns are Naußlitz in the northeast, Caßlau and Doberschütz in the east, Horka in the southeast, Gränze in the south and Rosenthal in the northwest. The Saxon State Road 97 runs through Zerna .

history

The settlement was first mentioned in 1419 as Czscherna . The current form of the name has been recorded since 1551. Even before that there was a moated castle south of today's location. At least since the 16th century there was a manor in Zerna, which also held the manorial rule in the place. The place was parish to Crostwitz from ancient times until 1716 . In 1838 the St. Marienstern monastery , which has large estates in the area, bought the Zernaer manor.

Zerna was an independent rural community until January 1, 1974, and since 1957 with border as a district. Then it was first incorporated into Rosenthal and finally came on January 1, 1994 to the municipality of Ralbitz-Rosenthal.

Population and language

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 160 in the 1880s; including without exception Sorbs . In 1956 Ernst Tschernik counted a Sorbian-speaking population of 97.9% in the municipality of Zerna. Even today, Sorbian is the predominant everyday language in the town.

The population increased from 132 to 177 between 1834 and 1939. After the Second World War , the place took in numerous expellees from the former eastern areas, so that the population in 1950 was 210. In contrast to many other places in Eastern Saxony, Zerna did not suffer any significant population decline after 1990. The number of inhabitants fluctuated between 180 and 200 during this period.

The majority of the devout residents are Roman Catholics to Ralbitz , the small Protestant portion belong to the Schmeckwitz parish .
