Nikola Eterović (born January 20, 1951 in Pučišća on Brač , Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia , today Croatia ) is a Curial Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church and a diplomat of the Holy See . He has been Apostolic Nuncio in Germany since September 21, 2013 . He is also doyen of the diplomatic corps .

Life

Nikola Eterović entered the Split seminary and studied philosophy and theology. He received his doctorate from the Pontifical Gregorian University . He received on June 26, 1977 by Bishop Celestin Bezmalinović in the cathedral of Hvar , the sacrament of Holy Orders . In 1977 he entered the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy in Rome and obtained a degree in missiology and canon law .

On March 25, 1980, Eterović entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See . He was active in the Apostolic Nunciatures in Ivory Coast , Spain and Nicaragua as well as in the section for relations with the states of the Vatican State Secretariat . Pope John Paul II awarded him the honorary title of Chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) on February 22, 1984 . On March 25, 1993, Nikola Eterović was appointed to the Nunciature Council of the Section for Relations with the States and on January 22, 1996, John Paul II conferred the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness .

On May 22, 1999 Pope John Paul II appointed him titular archbishop of Siscia and appointed him apostolic nuncio in Ukraine . The episcopal ordination received his Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano on July 10, 1999 at St. Peter's Basilica ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Split-Makarska , Ante Jurić , and the Bishop of Hvar , Slobodan Štambuk .

On February 11, 2004, John Paul II appointed him General Secretary of the Synod of Bishops . On November 30, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI. Eterović to the titular bishopric of Cibalae , since his previous titular bishopric was re-established as an ordinary diocese.

On September 21, 2013, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in Germany.

In addition to his Croatian mother tongue, he speaks Italian, French, English, German, Spanish and Ukrainian fluently, plus a little Polish and Russian.
