Celestin Bezmalinović

Celestin Duje Bezmalinović (born May 7, 1912 in Selca on Brač , Yugoslavia , † June 4, 1994 in Hvar ) was bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of Hvar .

Life

He grew up with nine siblings, attended elementary school in his hometown, then moved to high school in Bol on the island of Brač and in Dubrovnik . In 1930 he entered the Dominican Order . He studied philosophy and theology at the Theological Faculty of the University of Dubrovnik and was ordained a priest on July 3, 1938 . He studied chemistry and physics in Zagreb , was prior of the monasteries in Zagreb and Split . In 1946 he was arrested and sentenced to forced labor.

On August 7, 1956, Pope Pius XII appointed him . the auxiliary bishop in Hvar and titular bishop of Hadrumetum . It was consecrated on September 30, 1956 in the cathedral in Zagreb by Franjo Šeper , the coadjutor archbishop of Zagreb . Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops in Zagreb Franjo Salis-Seewis and Josip Lach . He was a council father in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council . In 1967 Pope Paul VI appointed him . as coadjutor bishop on the side of Archbishop Miho Pušić , who retired on June 6, 1970 . On this date Celestin Bezmalinović became diocesan bishop of Hvar. On March 30, 1989 , Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation due to reasons of age .

Celestin Duje Bezmalinović died at the age of eighty-two and was buried on June 6, 1994 in the crypt of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Hvar.
