The diocese of Hvar ( Croatian Hvarska biskupija , Latin Dioecesis Pharensis (-Brazensis et Lissensis) ) is a Roman Catholic diocese and suffragan diocese in Croatia , which is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Split-Makarska .

history

Hvar Cathedral

Until the 7th century, the islands of Hvar , Brač and Vis were subordinate to the Archdiocese of Split . The diocese of Hvar was only established in 1147. The first bishop was Martin I. Manzavini from Zadar . The bishop's seat was Stari Grad until 1278 , the cathedral was today's St. Stephen's Church . Then the diocese was moved to the town of Hvar , which was now the capital of the island at the instigation of the Republic of Venice , where it is still located today.

The diocese was initially subordinate to the Archdiocese of Zadar , which was already under Venetian control. In 1180 the island of Hvar fell to King Béla III. of Hungary and Croatia, who transferred the diocese to the Archdiocese of Split in 1185.

Since January 14, 1889, the territory of the diocese includes 46 municipalities on the islands of Hvar, Brač, Vis, Šćedro and some smaller neighboring islands.

The current cathedral of St. Stjepan in Hvar dates from the 16th century. The altarpieces to be seen there are by Italian masters of the 16th century.
