Stari Grad ( Croatian for "Old Town", Italian Cittàvecchia , in ancient Greek Pharos ) is a port town in the western part of the island of Hvar in the Croatian Split-Dalmatia County . The port is one of the most important on the island. The village has 1885 inhabitants (2011 census) and is therefore the second largest town on the island after Hvar .
history
The original Pharos settlement was founded in 384 BC. Founded by Greek colonists after they had broken the resistance of the old resident Illyrians . Mosaics under the pavement bear witness to the past. Stari Grad has appeared under the name Civitas Vetus since 1205 . In the 16th century, the poet Petar Hektorović built a villa that is still preserved today, in which he lived with his family for his entire life. Parts of the apartment have been preserved and the island's administration had a bronze bust erected in the place named after him in honor of the poet and polymath.
In 2008, the Stari Grad plain east of the city , which has been used for agriculture since ancient times, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List . The historic old town on the south side of the marina, built between the 16th and 19th centuries, is also part of the award-winning site.
There are several Roman Catholic churches in the village, including the imposing St. Stephen's Church , St. John's Church and St. Peter's Church by the Dominican monastery .
At the edge of the residential area, archaeologists have uncovered the remains of the initial settlement and made them accessible to tourists with information boards.
A partnership with the island and municipality of Šolta has existed since 2017 .
Economy and Infrastructure
The inhabitants live mainly from tourism (accommodation, restaurants, souvenir shops, city tours), but some fishing families are still active. The well-developed sailing harbor is important. Stari Grad is connected to the mainland by a car ferry to Split , Pescara and Ancona, and by the coastal ferry Rijeka - Dubrovnik .
