Peter's Church (Stari Grad, Hvar)

The St. Peters Church (Croatian: Crkva Sv. Petra Mučenika ) in Stari Grad is a Roman Catholic church in the oldest city in Croatia on the island of Hvar . It has a close structural connection to the Dominican monastery . The church is dedicated to the martyr Saint Peter . The building, which has been preserved in the 21st century, is the second church in the same place.

The church building is located north of the historical center of Stari Grad and consists of a main church building integrated into the Dominican monastery.

history

A papal bull of Sixtus IV. From August 7, 1481 determined the construction of a monastery church in Stari Grad for 1479 by the Dominican monk Brother German from Piacenza founded monastery . The sacred building erected outside the monastery walls received the patronage of Saint Peter when it was consecrated on December 3, 1488, like the monastery before.

The bell tower was built in the 16th century from the stones of the demolished city walls of Stari Grad (the city was called Pharos at that time ).

In the beginning of the 16th century and after the devastating looting and destruction by the Turkish conquerors in 1571, the monastery and the church were rebuilt. The monastery received two round defense towers for reinforcement.

In 1894, the church was completely rebuilt according to plans by the architect N. Nikolić from Split . The bell tower and the crypt with the remains of the poet Petar Hektorović as well as other small furnishings have been preserved from the initial construction period.

St. Peter's Church is a single-nave basilica with an attached choir and an integrated low bell tower . Its walls are made of hewn natural stones . The length of the ship is 23 m, the width (without the altar niches) is 12.80 m.

The main portal is located on the cloister of the monastery courtyard. Above the south portal there is a portrait showing Petar Hektorović and a Greek inscription from the 4th century BC. BC, the oldest stone inscription in Croatia. The original is exhibited in the Zagreb Archaeological Museum .

Furnishing

The last painting inside the church was done by Ivan Zamada from Zadar in 1896. The basic color is white, contrasting with pale blue and beige frames.

The main altar, dated 1769 and topped with a wooden crucifix in the Renaissance style , is the work of the master builder Andrija Bruttapelle. The altarpiece, already painted by Andrea Michiele Vicento in 1606, shows Our Lady of the Rosary , Pope Pius V and a Venetian doge at the victory celebration of the naval battle of Lepanto in 1571.

To the left and right of the main altar are further marble altars made by the artist Baldassare d'Anna in 1614: on the left Madonna with St. Hyacinth , on the right Saint Catherine of Siena .

Another altar was consecrated in the church in 1895, which is the work of Split-born artists Ante Kezić and Josip Bariković and honors Saint Peter . The altars for St. Dominik (1911, by Pavao Bilinic) and for St. Vincent Ferrer (1914/15, by Nikola Prezzi and C. Giudici) followed later.

The pulpit is placed on a pillar next to the choir arch and is made of wood.

The main room is equipped with a triple row pews equipped.

At least one chandelier , decorated with colored glass elements, now equipped with LED lights, hangs from the ceiling in the choir room.

Use and outbuildings

There are regular church services here and concerts and performances by church choirs take place in the church during the summer months.

In addition to the main structure, St. Peter's Church, the monastery houses a small manuscript archive and a library with around 20,000 books from the fields of philosophy, theology, biblical studies, linguistics, music, painting and other sciences. The library rooms were renovated in the 21st century and are open to anyone interested.

Exhibits in the monastery museum

A museum is housed in other monastery rooms on the ground floor , which presents artefacts from the history of the city and the history of the monastery. These include historical gravestones, ruins and everyday objects from the development of the place as well as some earlier pieces of equipment from the church: candlesticks, crosses, figures of saints and valuable paintings such as the Lamentation of Christ by the Venetian painter Jacopo Tintoretto .

The monastery also has 11 rooms and can accommodate 17 guests.
