Angolan-Swedish relations

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Angolan-Swedish relations include bilateral relations between Angola and Sweden .

Since Sweden's positive attitude towards the liberation movements in Angola during the Portuguese colonial war (1961–1975) and its increased development aid there, the relationship has been considered good.

history

In the 17th century Sweden had smaller colonies in Africa for a while. However, Swedish merchant ships drove hardly further south than to the Swedish possessions on the Gold Coast in West Africa, so that they rarely came to Angola, which, as a Portuguese colony, maintained a lively exchange of goods with the European mainland, past the Portuguese and Swedish bases on the west coast of Africa .

In 1961 the Portuguese colonial war broke out in Angola . The Swedish missionaries, who were also active in Angola, were mostly seen as sympathizers and in part also as supporters of the independence movements.

In 1970, Sweden began its first development aid projects in what was then a Portuguese colony as part of its development policy. At times the Scandinavian country had so many development projects in various areas that the Swedish embassy in Luanda became one of the largest foreign missions in Sweden. After the last projects expired in 2010, the diplomatic mission shrank to one of the smallest, with an ambassador and only three local embassy employees. Since then, economic relations have been the main focus of embassy activities and Angolan-Swedish relations as a whole. For years, Angola has been one of the 26 most important countries in Swedish foreign trade policy.

In February 2020, the two countries agreed on a number of collaborations, for example in the expansion of renewable energies or digital communications and online services, but above all the sending of Swedish experts to train the state anti-corruption authority IGAE ( Inspecção Geral da Administração do Estado ). Ewa Polano , the Swedish ambassador to Angola who will take office in 2019, led the Swedish commission in the negotiations.
