life and work

Glance into the poet's typical Dalmatian cuisine

Petar Hektorović stayed in his place of birth, which is on the island of Hvar , throughout his life . He only left the island once for a three-day trip on a fishing boat. He drove to the Supetar Bay in Nečujam, about 25 km away, on the neighboring island of Šolta and visited the place where the "father of Croatian literature" Marko Marulić stayed from 1510 to 1512. On the basis of his quasi- ethnographic observations, his most important work, Ribanje i ribarsko prigovaranje ( Eng . "Fisheries and the dialogues of fishermen") was created, which tries to present the dialogues of fishermen in their everyday language, but also an epic poem from the Genus representing the Bugarštice . It was completed on January 14, 1566 and printed in Venice in 1568 . In the three-part work, he describes in a letter to his cousin a three-day boat trip with the fishermen Paskoje Debelja and Nikola Zet from Hvar. The work is the first realistic, secular travelogue in the Croatian language, the landscape and the beauties of nature as its content. The Ribanje ... are one of the earliest records of the Croatian way of life and a collection of fishing songs.
