history
The area of today's Podstrana was already inhabited during the Stone Age, but evidence of the existence of stone-built houses is not only provided by archaeological finds but also by a tradition from the Roman scribe Pliny the Elder . He tells of a fort that was built here by Illyrian settlers and shortly afterwards was taken by the Roman invaders. Slavic tribes made their home in Podstrana at the beginning of the 7th century.
Podstrana was subordinated to the Doges of Venice in 1444 and later, between 1514 and 1686, to the Turks . From 1686 to 1806 Podstrana was part of the former Poljica Republic . In 1806 Napoleon I conquered the area, a little later the French were expelled by the Austrians.
