Ante Kaštelančić

Ante Kaštelančić (born August 17, 1911 in Podstrana , † April 15, 1989 in Split ) was a Yugoslav painter , graphic artist and art teacher . His expressionist paintings are unique to Croatian art.

Life

Kaštelančić began studying painting with Emanuel Vidović at the Split Technical School. From 1926 to 1930 he studied decorative painting at the State School of Applied Arts in Munich and then painting in Ljubo Babić's class at the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts , where he graduated in 1935 . From 1937 to 1938 he continued his studies in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts and the school of André Lhote . Kaštelančić took part in the 1938 exhibition “Pola vijeka hrvatske umjetnosti” (Half a century of Croatian art) in the Zagreb Art Pavilion and in 1943 at the “Croatian Art Exhibition” at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin (January / February) and in the Künstlerhaus Vienna (April / May). After the Second World War , in 1945 he became professor of drawing at the "Vladimir Nazor" grammar school in Split and in 1946 he organized an evening school for applied arts , where he was active from 1947 to 1959.

Kaštelančić was the founder and chairman of the Center for Art Education at the Pedagogical Academy of Split, where he worked as a professor from the academic years 1957/58 to 1976/77.

He visited Paris again in 1956 and 1963 and was also on study trips to Venice , Milan , Prague , Munich , Vienna and London .

Kaštelančić worked on improving contemporary art education for children and young people and took part in the world congresses of the International Society for Education through Art (INSEA) in Prague (1966), New York (1969) and Coventry (1970).

His expressionist paintings from the late 1930s to the end of the 1950s often show the people, landscapes and places of southern Dalmatia in colorful and expressive figurative compositions and portraits . B. Trpanj , Pelješac and Dubrovnik . In addition, he created wall paintings as well as interior decorations of domestic and foreign ships and worked on stage designs .

In 1944 he portrayed the Croatian leader Ante Pavelić with a published drawing .

Awards

He has received several awards for his painting, graphics and educational work. His works can be found in numerous Croatian and international museums , galleries and private collections . Many works are preserved in his family's collection in Podstrana.

In 2000, Croatia issued a special stamp and a first day cover in Kaštelančić's honor .

In his 100th year of birth, 2011, a public exhibition of his works took place in the Zagreb Art Pavilion .

Others

Kaštelančić's birthplace in Podstrana (Grljevac branch) is used as a holiday home.
