geography
Podgora is nine kilometers south-east of Makarska between the sea and the Adriatic highway . On the outskirts, the terrain rises steeply to the Biokovo Mountains. On the slope there are some hamlets belonging to the village. Behind the headland Council Sv. Tekla is the district of Čaklje.
history
Podgora was first mentioned in a document in 1571 after the naval battle of Lepanto , in which 30 coastal towns fell to Venice . The inhabitants of Podgoras lived on the slopes of Biokovo and not on the coast for fear of pirates . During the brief French rule from 1805 to 1814, the area was developed by building roads. In 1942, the first naval division of the Yugoslav People's Liberation Army , consisting of two ships, was set up in the old port of Podgora . Today the monumental monument Galebova Krila (German seagull wing ), which was unveiled on the 20th anniversary of this event, commemorates this. Only after the severe earthquake of 1962, which caused great damage, did the majority of the residents settle directly by the sea. At the beginning of the 20th century Podgora was integrated into the state of Yugoslavia . When the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was destroyed by the Axis Powers during World War II , the town became a municipality of the Independent State of Croatia when the fascist Ustaša came to power in 1941 . After the end of the war it belonged again to Yugoslavia.
economy
The main industry today is tourism . The first tourists visited Podgora before 1910. The first hotel opened in 1922. Podgora has around 6,000 guest beds in hotels, holiday apartments and pensions. The main attraction is the four kilometer long fine pebble beach.
Also worth mentioning are fishing, olive and wine growing and grazing.
traffic
Podgora is located on the Adriatic main road (state road D8), 70 kilometers from Split and 140 kilometers from Dubrovnik . A regional road (Ž6198) leads to the state road D512 between Makarska and Ravča . The regional road Ž6199, which connects the D512 with the D62, is still in the municipality.
The port of Podgora was expanded in 1994. Together with the renewed port of the Čaklje district, Podgora has 360 berths for boats and yachts. The nearest airport is Split-Kaštela Airport .
