history

Trogir was already in the 3rd century BC. Known as the Greek settlement Τραγούριον Tragourion . Trogir lost its former importance due to the rapid rise of the nearby town of Salona . During the time of the arrival of Slavic tribes, refugees from the destroyed Salona settled in the city. From the 9th century onwards, the population had to pay tribute to the Croatian rulers. The city became a bishopric in the 11th century ( bishopric was abolished in 1828). In 1107 the Hungarian King Koloman granted the city its autonomy rights - according to tradition, because of the successful resistance of Bishop John (Ivan) , who is therefore venerated as the city's patron saint.

In 1123 the Saracens conquered the city and almost destroyed it to the ground. The city recovered quickly and experienced a strong economic boom in the 12th and 13th centuries. In 1242, King Béla IV sought refuge here from the Tatars . In the 13th and 14th centuries, Trogir, part of the principality of Bribir , chose its princes most often from the ranks of the Šubić family ; under them stood Mladen III. (1348). The long period of Venetian rule began in 1420 .

After the fall of Venice in 1797, Trogir was Austrian until 1918 (with the exception of the French occupation from 1806 to 1814) and then fell to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes . It later became part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia . Trogir has been part of the independent state of Croatia since 1991 .
