Słupca ( German Slupca , 1943–1945 Grenzhausen (Wartheland) ) is a town in the eastern part of the Polish Greater Poland Voivodeship . Słupca is the capital of the powiat Słupecki . The city has 14,000 inhabitants. Słupca is a municipality and the seat of an independent rural municipality with around 9,000 inhabitants.
Geographical location
The city is located about 70 kilometers east of the city of Poznan and 25 kilometers east of the city of Września ( Wreschen ).
history
The place was mentioned for the first time in 1176. In 1290 the place received from its owner, the Poznan bishop Johann, Neumarkt city rights . On January 11, 1314, Władysław I. Ellenlang in Slupca granted the Poznan Bishop Andreas, owner of the city, the right to erect a coin in the city , the minting of which should be valid throughout Poland . The small town was surrounded by walls in the Middle Ages. In 1331 it was destroyed by fire.
Due to the second partition of Poland , the city came temporarily to Prussia from 1793 to 1807 . From 1807 to 1815, Słupca was part of the Duchy of Warsaw and then part of Congress Poland . The town lost its town charter in 1867, but was regained in 1932.
During the German occupation in World War II , it bore the German name Grenzhausen . The city had a Roman Catholic Church, a Greek Catholic Church and a synagogue.
