Richard Roepell (1808-1893)

Richard Roepell (born November 4, 1808 in Danzig , † November 4, 1893 in Breslau ) was a German historian and politician. He worked in Breslau for over 52 years. Its extensive history of Poland is famous .

Life

Richard Roepell was born the son of a Danzig lawyer and was baptized as a Protestant. He studied at the Friedrichs-Universität Halle and for a short time at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin . During his studies he became a member of the Old Halleschen Burschenschaft Germania in 1830 and of the Kränzchenverein Berlin in 1832 . Since 1832 he was a member of the Corps Saxonia Halle . In 1834 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD .

Hall

In the same year he completed his habilitation. On the recommendation of his teacher Heinrich Leo , he was commissioned to write a history of Poland for the Perthesche collection of the history of European states ; because there was not yet a useful German-language summary. Roepell learned the Polish language and supplemented the existing documents on trips to Gdansk and Poland . In his History of Poland, First Part , published in 1840 , which covers the period from 850 to 1300 of the Middle Ages and to which he had preceded the German-Polish political relationship burdened by the three Polish partitions , he preserved the leitmotif: Truth alone makes free a completely impartial attitude. He succeeded very well in depicting, on the one hand, the defensive position of the closed Polish nobility and the church in medieval Poland against German influence, but on the other hand also working out the strong impact of German culture on Poland around this time. He called himself a student of Leopold von Rankes and was on friendly terms with all well-known German historians. His history of Poland was later continued by Jacob Caro .

Wroclaw

In 1841 he followed the reputation of the Royal University of Breslau to a professorship . “In the absence of a university in Poznan, Wroclaw was one of the meeting places for scientifically ambitious Prussian Poles.” (ADB) After Gustav Stenzel's death in 1855, he became a full professor and chair of history. For the academic years 1867/68 and 1883/84 he was elected rector of the university. He died on his 85th birthday.

Memberships

politics

By his own admission, Roepell had long been quite apolitical. However, he was then drawn into the political discussions of the Vormärz and after some time joined the radical group of the Young Hegelians ( Ernst Theodor Echtermeyer , Arnold Ruge ). He made public speeches on recent history. It finally found its final political location with the National Liberals . Gustav Freytag praised the firmness of his character . In 1850 he was elected to the Erfurt parliament , in 1861 to the Prussian House of Representatives , to which he belonged with interruptions until 1877. Roepell contributed to the revival of the gymnastics movement in the middle of the 19th century. He also became a representative of the University of Breslau in the Prussian mansion in 1877 . In 1867 he sat in the first Reichstag (North German Confederation) . In Wroclaw he worked as a city councilor for decades .

family

Roepell was married to Henriette Magdalena geb. Geysmer , called Hella (born April 21, 1820 in Warsaw , † January 16, 1857 in Breslau). He had married her as a private lecturer and lost her early. The marriage had at least three children. A daughter, the last of the children, died shortly after her birth in 1857. His son Richard Roepell was killed on August 31, 1870 in the Battle of Colombey in the Franco-Prussian War . His second son, Max Gerhard Roepell (1841–1903), became the Royal Prussian Railway President.
