Wilhelm Ferdinand Arndt (born September 27, 1838 in Lobsens in the province of Posen ; † January 9/10 , 1895 in Leipzig ) was a German historian and paleographer .

Life

After attending school in Elbing and Kulm , Arndt began studying history at the University of Berlin with Leopold von Ranke in 1858 and after just one year he moved to the University of Göttingen to attend Georg Waitz's seminar there. In 1861 he received his doctorate in Göttingen on a topic from the Middle Ages. phil. with summa cum laude and then got a job as an editor at the Monumenta Germaniae Historica through Waitz , for which he opened up considerable sources for publication on many trips through Europe until 1875.

At the same time, he dealt with palaeography , albeit not entirely remote, and published tables of significance for the historical auxiliary sciences (see Michael Tangl ) in which the development of medieval scripts could be read. The first edition appeared in 1874 and the second edition in 1887. In 1875 Arndt completed his habilitation at the University of Leipzig and became an associate professor the following year. This happened against the resistance of Heinrich Wuttke , who had considered the focus of Arndt's work on the edition of medieval documents to be of secondary importance. However, it was only 19 years later, shortly before his sudden death, that he was appointed to the full professorship. The fact that it took so long was not least due to the constant tension with the director of the historical seminar Wilhelm Maurenbrecher .

Arndt was a member of the Leipzig Professors' Association.

The landscape painter Franz Gustav Arndt (1842–1905) was his brother.
