Hermann Mensch (born May 22, 1831 in Angerburg , Masuria ; † February 1914 ) was a German high school teacher and Freemason.

Life

Hermann Mensch attended the Royal Lyck High School from 1846 to 1848 . From 1848 to 1852 he studied philology and history at the Albertus University in Königsberg . With Julius Frenzel he became a member of the Corps Masovia in the winter semester of 1848/49 . After three years as an assistant teacher in Insterburg , he went to Paris in 1855 for scientific studies . He passed the exam pro facultate docendi in 1857 and was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD .

In 1858 he became sub-principal at the secondary school in Lübben (Spreewald) . Married to Fanny Stantien († 1874), he became the father of Ella Mensch , who was one of the first women to receive her doctorate and become a writer in 1886. Hermann Mensch became a senior teacher at the secondary school in Neustadt-Eberswalde in 1861 . In 1866 he came to Gollnow near Stettin as the principal of the boys 'school and the girls' school associated with it . At Easter 1874 he was appointed to the Putbus pedagogy . The following year, as a 43-year-old widower, he became the conductor of the secondary school for girls in Katowice, Upper Silesia . Presumably because of his daughter living in Hesse , he moved (probably at the end of the 1880s) to Darmstadt and from there to the secondary school in Giessen . He worked as an editor in Wiesbaden .

A Freemason since 1854 , he became a co-founder and honorary master of the Freemason Lodge Barnim zur Goldenen Aue in Gollnow, honorary member of the Great National Mother Lodge “To the Three Worlds” and Honorary Master of the Lodge Friedrich Wilhelm zu den Drei Hammern in Eberswalde.

Works

In addition to school books, Mensch mainly wrote collections of speeches and toasts as well as works on Freemasonry . He also published under the pseudonyms H. Normann, H. Nordheim and Wilhelm Arndt.
