Eduard Maria Oettinger's grave in the churchyard of Loschwitz Church in Dresden

Eduard Maria Oettinger came from a wealthy Jewish family. But the parents were impoverished by the war caused by Napoleon . Oettinger attended the Maria-Magdalenen-Gymnasium in Breslau , where he graduated from high school, but had to break off his studies for financial reasons. In Vienna , where in 1828 he the Catholic adopted faith, he worked at the Theater-Zeitung of Adolf Bäuerle ; then he went to Berlin , where he became a member of the tunnel over the Spree and in 1829 published the satirical magazine Eulenspiegel . The magazine was banned in November 1831 and Oettinger published the magazine Das Schwarze Gespenst in Munich . This magazine was also banned and Oettinger was expelled from the country. After stays in France, Belgium and the Netherlands, he edited newspapers in Berlin ( Berlin Figaro , editing of the sheet incognito 1831–1836) and Hamburg ( Oettinger's Argus , 1837–1838). He moved to Leipzig and published the satirical magazine Charivari from 1842 to 1849 and the fool's almanac from 1843 to 1849 . After a long stay in Paris and Brussels in 1852/53 he lived in Dresden and Blasewitz from 1860 onwards.

Oettinger died in Blasewitz in 1872. His grave is in the church yard of the Loschwitz church .

The writer Rudolf Genée provides a brief description and summarizing assessment of Oettinger's person and work : "In addition to very pretty poems, several of which were composed, he had also written some novels of dubious value; but the main work of his life, and the most meritorious , was his Moniteur des Dates , a work of persistent and astonishing diligence that has appeared since 1866 and for which he has relentlessly collected the data for many years. Oettinger was also entertaining in the agility of his mind, both because of his much knowledge and because of himself Truly comical vanity. This was evident both when reading his poems, about which he spoke with delight, as well as in the awareness that he had very small feet, which he also paid homage to with the finest patent leather boots. "

Oettinger published poems, stories, dramas, humorous-satirical and historical novels, as well as a six-volume biographical lexicon of world history.
