Ella Mensch (born March 5, 1859 in Lübben , † May 5, 1935 in Berlin ) was a German writer , educator and editor of the magazine Frauen-Rundschau .

Life

Ella Mensch was born as the daughter of the senior teacher Hermann Mensch , who later became the rector of the boys 'and girls' school in Gollnow near Stettin . Ella also attended school there. In addition, she received private lessons from her father in Greek and Latin and music lessons from her mother Fanny Stantien († 1874). In Berlin she attended the teachers' seminar for higher and middle schools, which she graduated from in 1879. In 1880 she enrolled at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Zurich (one of the few universities that was open to women at that time). In addition to philosophical and philological studies, she also dealt with theology.

In 1884 she returned to Germany to become a reporter for opera and drama at the Darmstädter Tagblatt . She later wrote for the Daily Gazette . In addition, she worked on her doctoral thesis with which it 1886 in Zurich with magna cum laude to the Dr. phil. received his doctorate . This made her one of the earliest doctoral students in Europe. In her partly autobiographical novel Auf Vorposten , twenty years later she processed her student days in Zurich.

She then worked as a teacher at higher girls' institutes in Darmstadt and Frankfurt am Main . She also gave recitation evenings in Darmstadt, Frankfurt am Main and Wiesbaden as well as literary lectures in all major cities in Germany. She received the Silver Medal for Art and Science from Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse and the Rhine .

As a writer, she published novels, treatises on literary and cultural history as well as magazine articles, from 1900 onwards in the magazine Das Literarian Echo - a bi-monthly publication for friends of literature . She cultivated an approach between emancipated and conservative values. In 1904 she became editor of the Frauen-Rundschau and from then on lived in Berlin . She also appeared in 1904 as a speaker for the German delegation at the International Women's Congress in Berlin. From 1905 she was a lecturer in literary and art history at the Lyceum des Westens .

When Ella Mensch died in Berlin in 1935 at the age of 76, an obituary said about her: “After a long sick bed, Miss. Ella Mensch, Berlin, well-known writer and long-time employee of the 'Darmstädter Tagblatt' different. "She was buried in the old St.-Matthäus-Kirchhof in Schöneberg . The grave has not been preserved.
