The Darmstädter Tagblatt was a daily newspaper that had been published since 1738 and was called a Darmstädter daily newspaper from 1874, but its publication was discontinued in 1986.

As the third oldest German daily newspaper, it was one of the oldest newspapers in the world. Since October 24, 1738, a newspaper (again) appeared in Darmstadt, initially weekly. It was entitled "Darmstädtische Question and Anzeigungs-Blättgen" (with the "gracious privilege" of the then Hessian landgrave). This then became the "Darmstädter Tagblatt" in 1874.

The paper was published for a total of 248 years. In 1986 the traditional Darmstädter Tagblatt , which had got into financial difficulties, became the "Darmstädter Tagblatt Verlagsgesellschaft mbh" by its competitor, the " Darmstädter Echo Verlag und Druckerei GmbH", (together with the Odenwälder Heimatzeitung ) from the previous owner, the "Mainzer Verlagsanstalt", bought off. After only three months, on September 30, 1986, the Darmstädter Tagblatt was discontinued due to economic losses in the millions, with the losses being partly due to at least two publishing house managers who were sentenced to several years imprisonment for fake and excessive invoices worth millions.

Since September 19, 2013, a new Darmstädter Zeitung has been published as a weekly newspaper under the new title “Darmstädter Tagblatt”. It is free and should first be published under the name “Darmstädter Zeitung”, but was renamed Darmstädter Tagblatt after a legal dispute with the publisher of the “Darmstädter Echo”. The editor is among others Helmut Markwort .
