Yalova (in ancient times Pylai , German earlier also Jalowa ) is the capital of the Turkish province of Yalova and at the same time the center of a district directly subordinate to the governor ( Vali ), the central district ( Merkez ). It is located on the south-eastern part of the Marmara Sea , only 24 nautical miles from Istanbul .
The town
Yalova is a popular resort with a high level of local tourism. Many of the tourists come from Istanbul and the surrounding area and own a vacation home there. There are many vegetable and other gardens on the main road, the connecting road between İzmit and Bursa . Tourists from Arab countries also come to Yalova to spend their holidays there, mostly from Kuwait , the United Arab Emirates or Saudi Arabia .
In the center of the city is a roundabout with a statue of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in the middle. After the 1999 earthquake , many new buildings were built in the city. The Sahil beach promenade was expanded and embellished. A little to the west of the promenade, new parks were built on the rubble of the destroyed houses. Along the promenade there is a long sandy beach with many parks, children's playgrounds, tea gardens, ice cream parlors, restaurants and cafes. To the east of the harbor is a large park with an amphitheater . Events take place there in summer.
There are thermal springs about 12 km southwest in the mountains above Yalova . The thermal baths, called Pythia Therma in antiquity , have been used since the Hellenistic era and were also very popular in the Byzantine and Ottoman times. Because of their healing properties, they were also visited by Constantine the Great , Emperor Justin I and Kemal Ataturk . The latter had the bathrooms renovated. Therefore his residence in Yalova (like the one in Florya ) was converted into a museum as Ataturk's house .
One of the earlier names of Yalova was Yalakabad. According to the city seal, Yalova received the status of a Belediye (municipality) in 1927 and has been a twin town of Bonn since 1969 . B. a park called "Bad Godesberg Parkı". There are speedboat connections to Istanbul from Yalova.
Yalova was badly hit by the great Marmara earthquake on August 17th, 1999. The earthquake killed over 16,000 people, left 25,000 injured and an unknown number of people missing. The magnitude of the earthquake was 7.8 and it lasted 45 seconds.
7 km southwest of the city is the Gökçe dam , which was built to supply drinking water .
district
The central district ( Merkez ) was created together with the province of the same name in 1995 by splitting off part of the Yalova district from the Istanbul province . It is divided into the district town with 86.5% of the district population and another municipality ( Belediye ), namely Kadıköy with 8,198 inhabitants. The district also has eleven villages ( Köy ) with a total population of 11,253 inhabitants. These have an average population of 1,023 residents. Four villages have over a thousand inhabitants: Safran (1,412), Sugören (1,691), Elmalık (1,903) and Samanlı (2,352).
