Thomas Corsten
Thomas Corsten (born February 3, 1961 in Aachen ) is a German epigraphist and ancient historian .
Thomas Corsten studied Ancient History, Classical Philology, Classical Archeology and Near Eastern Antiquity in Cologne from 1980 to 1984 . He received his doctorate in 1984 under Reinhold Merkelbach . From 1985 to 1986 and from 1989 to 1991 he was a research assistant at the University of Cologne. After a stay at the Université Lyon , he worked again as a research assistant in Cologne from 1992 to 1994.
Parallel to a scientific activity from 1995 to 1998 at the University of Frankfurt , he received his habilitation in 1997 from Fritz Gschnitzer with a thesis on the topic From Tribe to Federation: Establishment and Territorial Organization of Greek Federal States at the University of Heidelberg . A substitute professor from 2002 to 2003 was followed in 2004 by the appointment as adjunct professor at the University of Heidelberg. Since February 1, 2010, he has been professor for Greek history, antiquity and epigraphy at the University of Vienna . In 2016 he was elected as a corresponding member in Germany of the philosophical-historical class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .
Corsten has been co-editor of the Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum since 2004 . His main research interests are historical geography, epigraphy and numismatics of Asia Minor in Hellenism and the Imperial Era as well as Greek and constitutional history. He has been conducting surveys in Kibyra for many years .
