Adolf Wilhelm (philologist)

Adolf Wilhelm (born September 10, 1864 in Tetschen , Bohemia , † August 10, 1950 in Vienna ) was an Austrian epigraphist and classical philologist .

life and work

After studying Classical Philology at the University of Vienna , Wilhelm went to Greece on a travel grant and, in 1891, researched the ancient monuments and inscriptions of Cilicia for the Vienna Academy of Sciences . From 1894 he was a private lecturer at the University of Vienna, in 1898 he became secretary of the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Athens , where he mainly carried out epigraphic research. From 1905 Wilhelm was professor of Greek antiquity and epigraphy at the University of Vienna and retired in 1933. In 1911 Wilhelm was elected a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences , 1920 of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and 1931 of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and the British Academy .

Wilhelm published numerous studies on Greek inscriptions, especially Athens, and was considered the most important epigraphist of his time.
