Life

Adolf Bauer, who came from a farming family in Egerland , studied history at the University of Vienna , where he was particularly influenced by Max Büdinger . After graduating as Dr. phil. (1876) he deepened his studies at the universities of Bonn (with Arnold Dietrich Schaefer ) and Berlin and stayed as a private teacher for noble families in Cairo and Venice. In 1880 he qualified as a professor for ancient history at the University of Graz and was appointed associate professor in 1884. With his appointment as full professor (1891) he became the first professor of this subject at the university. To train his students, he founded the ancient history department of the historical seminar and set up a paleographic apparatus.

Adolf Bauer spent almost his entire career at the University of Graz despite several calls from German universities. In the years 1895/1896 and 1903/1904 he was dean of the philosophical faculty, in 1910/1911 rector of the university. He received rich recognition for his scientific achievements: he was appointed court counselor and a corresponding member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Vienna . In 1916, Bauer accepted a position at the University of Vienna. However, he died a few years later. He was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .
