Ingomar Weiler (born April 28, 1938 in Treglwang , Styria ) is an Austrian ancient historian .

Ingomar Weiler graduated from the teacher training college in Salzburg. He completed the subsequent teacher training course in history and physical education in Graz in 1962 with a dissertation from Erich Swoboda on Pannonia in the Diocletian period. Then Weiler worked as an assistant at the Institute for Ancient History at the University of Innsbruck . In 1969 a one-year research stay at the Center for Hellenic Studies at Harvard University followed . In 1972 he completed his habilitation in Innsbruck on the subject of The Agon in Myth. On the attitude of the Greeks to competition . In 1976 he accepted the position of full professor at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz , where he worked as a professor at the Institute for Ancient History and Antiquity until his retirement in March 2002. In 1981, he turned down a temporary call to the University of Innsbruck to succeed Franz Hampl . In 2007 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Mainz .

In his research, Weiler combines sport with the topic of ancient history. This focus primarily includes the problems surrounding the origin of sport, criticism of the Olympics, spectator behavior and didactic tasks. In addition, he dealt with the problem of the release of slaves.
